January '19

Bilgi University Arts and Cultural Management Lecturer and Cultural Economist Funda Lena new book " Variety in Turkish Music Industry" was published by Kreksa Kültür Publications. The book examines the reasons for the difference between the variety of music produced and the variety of music consumed in Turkey.

In the context of the ‘popular’ in the music industry, Funda Lena questions people's freedom of choice in terms of consumption. Lena, who asserts that production companies claim an unfair victory over independent music companies and artists due to the unfairness of the algorithms of digital music-listening platforms and social media, states that the musicians are equal in the sense of broadcasting the songs, but the same cannot be said about reaching the audience. The songs played are not what the public want but what the media wants the public to want.

As a result, even in the Internet which at first glance seems to be a more democratic environment compared to the traditional media, we are faced with a disguised mainstream.

“As a solution, two suggestions are made to increase diversity on the consumption side, the first is to take measures to increase the diversity in mainstream music media as a cultural policy, and the second is to combine the forces by organizing of the alternatives among themselves and develop projects that will increase the visibility of the alternative music market in general.”[1]
