The first women’s museum which used the definition “women’s museum” in its name was the Frauenmuseum Bonn, established in 1981. In 2015 women’s museums represented on all continents and they work with key issues of women’s lives such as “power”, “politics”, “economics”, “culture of remembrance“, “identity” or “diversity and inclusion”, developing a new language and a gendered view of history when looking at aspects such as gender discrimination and diversity, environmental degradation or war and peace. After almost 40 years of experience we believe time has come for women’s museums to discuss their contribution to the formation of an inclusive society in the framework of an international conference. In this context central topics of the conference will be the cross cultural dimensions of the work of women’s museums through intercultural and intergenerational dialogue and their activities in dealing with cultural diversity.

This highly exciting and challenging international conference is intended to be a forum, discussion and networking place for academics, researchers, professionals, administrators, educational leaders, policy makers, museum representatives, advanced students and others interested in leadership, women empowerment and gender studies.

The conference topics include the questions: How do women’s museums explore and understand social memory? How do they create and re-create the ongoing process of social memory with reference to diversity? Which conceptual approaches are there in women’s museums for inclusive policies? Who are the cooperation partners to transform the museum into a platform for inclusion? What are the strategies to open up a space for debate and social involvement?
