CAMMA Thursday Talks: Sustainability in the Independent Art Formations

Organized within the framework of CAMMA Thursday Talks and moderated by Dr. Esra Yıldız, the panel, “Sustainability in the Independent Art Formations” was held on 20th December, 2018 at Istanbul Bilgi University.

Speakers, Ezgi Bakçay, Yiğit Sertdemir and Sinem Öçalır discussed the conditions and sustainability strategies of contemporary art collectivities and independent theater communities in Istanbul.

In addition to the discussions, speakers’ experience with “Karşı Sanat” and “Ağustos Atölyesi” which turned TÜYAP into a public art environment, the establishment process of “Altıdan Sonra Tiyatro,” and “Tiyatro Kooperatifi Girişimi” were also shared in the panel.

 

  

 

Speakers

Ezgi Bakçay (Karşı Sanat Çalışmaları)

Ezgi Bakçay graduated from the department of Cinema and Television at Galatasaray University. She completed her Master’s degree in Sculpture at Marmara University. Bakçay has carried out researches in the fields of aesthetics and political science at Le Centre Européen de Sociologie et de Science Politique de la Sorbonne, l’Université Paris-Panthéon-Sorbonne and EHESS. She earned a doctorate degree in Sociology at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. Since 2006, she has been teaching “Art Theories”, “Methods of Analysis of Artwork” and “Visual Culture” at Marmara University and “Art Management” at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. Bakçay also gives courses in the field of art theory in various institutions and private universities. She worked as a curator and art consultant at both national and international art activities. As both an art theorist and a critic, she has published articles in various journals. Currently she is a curator of Karşı Sanat.

 

Yiğit Sertdemir (Altıdan Sonra Tiyatro)

Yiğit Sertdemir wrote his first play “Yumuşak Ge” in 1998. He founded “Altıdan Sonra Tiyatro” with his friends from Istanbul Technical Universiy in 1999. In the same year, he made a professional appearance for the first time at Sadri Alışık Theatre. In 2002, he switched to Yeditepe University, andlater graduated from the department of Theater. Sertdemir started to work as a ‘per diem artist’ at Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality City Theater. In 2009, he was among the people who founded the stage of Kumbaracı50. Currently, he actively works at Altıdan Sonra Tiyatro and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality City Theater.

 

Sinem Öçalır (Kumbaracı50 and Tiyatro Kooperatifi Girişimi)

Sinem Öçalır is both an actress and the venue coordinator at Kumbaracı50. She is also a member of the Theater Cooperative Enterprise.
